Live Search Advanced Search opens in beta

Live Search Advanced Search arrived as a beta on September 19, 2024. It adds query capabilities that standard search did not have — the startsWith and contains operators — so you can build layered, context-aware search rather than one box and a hope.

The operators

Advanced Search supports SQL-like operators. startsWith matches products where a specific field begins with certain text, which suits prefix-based filtering. contains matches products where a field includes the text anywhere in the value, which suits partial and fuzzy matching.

That covers cases like finding products whose title starts with a brand name, or whose description contains a particular keyword. Operators can be layered to build queries for genuinely specific customer needs.

Layered search in practice

Instead of pushing every customer through a single search box, you can build a multi-step search interface. A jewellery store might start with diamond rings where cut starts with F — Flawless, Faint and so on — then layer in price range, colour and carat. The customer reaches the right piece without wading through hundreds of products.

Why it matters

Customers who know exactly what they want can express it precisely rather than browsing a broad category until they lose interest. That precision tends to convert, and it makes for a better experience on the way.

It is a beta

Adobe wants feedback. If you take it early, try query combinations against the search scenarios your actual customers run, and tell Adobe what breaks. That feedback shapes the feature before general availability.

The direction is clear enough: search is moving from keyword matching towards understanding intent, and these operators are a step along that road.
