Headless eCommerce, from the people who went first

We decoupled our first Magento storefront when most of the market was still arguing about whether it was a good idea. Fifteen years later we have delivered 50+ headless eCommerce sites — LeMieux across ten storefronts, Sanderson Design Group across six brands, MyFUJIFILM, Millie's Cookies — and Adobe Commerce as a Service has arrived headless-only. We are not adapting to that. We have been building for it since before Adobe bought Magento.

The headless advantage

Headless Magento and Adobe Commerce deliver tangible business benefits that traditional architectures simply can't match — built on 15+ years of specialist experience.

Lightning-Fast Performance

Headless architecture enables sub-second page loads, superior technical performance and app-like experiences that keep customers engaged and boost conversions.

Omnichannel Excellence

One Magento or Adobe Commerce backend powers unlimited frontends — web, mobile apps, in-store kiosks and emerging channels.

Superior SEO Rankings

Our headless implementations achieve top search rankings with server-side rendering, optimised technical SEO and content strategies that drive organic traffic.

Future-Proof Architecture

Headless decouples frontend from backend, enabling rapid innovation and easy adoption of new technologies without platform migrations.

Personalisation at Scale

Headless architecture enables sophisticated personalisation, A/B testing and dynamic content delivery for exceptional customer experiences.

Proven ROI

Measurable results: 61% revenue growth for LeMieux, 100% revenue increase for Topps Tiles Trade, and 81% uplift for Barker & Stonehouse.

From Magento 1to app-like PWA.

While most agencies were still building traditional themes, we were pioneering headless Magento architectures — decoupling frontend from backend to unlock performance and flexibility. Magento 2 and 30k+ hours of PWA development followed, delivering top search rankings and app-like experiences.

Adobe Commerce Cloud as a Service is headless-only — and with 15+ years of specialist experience, we're not adapting to headless, we've been mastering it for over a decade. We've delivered multi-site headless builds for LeMieux (10 sites), MyFUJIFILM and Sanderson Design Group (6 brands).

Headless is a trade-off, and you should know which side you're on

Going headless buys you speed, front-end freedom and the ability to serve one catalogue to a website, an app, a kiosk and a marketplace without rebuilding it four times. It costs you simplicity. Two systems to deploy instead of one, a rendering layer that needs owning, and a category of caching bug that does not exist on a monolith.

Worth it when:

  • Performance is revenue. A decoupled front end is how you get Core Web Vitals under control on a large catalogue.

  • You sell in more than one place. Multi-brand, multi-territory, or commerce that has to appear inside something that is not your website.

  • Your front-end team wants to move independently of the platform release cycle.

Not worth it when you have one storefront, a modest catalogue and no in-house front-end capability. In that case a well-built Magento theme will outperform a badly-run headless build every time, and cost a third as much. We would rather tell you that at the scoping stage than eighteen months in.

Adobe Commerce as a Service changes the calculus, because it removes the choice — ACCS is headless-only. If you are heading there, the question is no longer whether to go headless but who has done it enough times to make it uneventful.

Proof

Ten storefronts, six brands, one back end

LeMieux runs ten headless storefronts across territories from a single Adobe Commerce back end — local pricing, local content, local languages, one team maintaining it.

Sanderson Design Group runs six heritage brands the same way, each with its own identity, none with its own platform bill.

Topps Tiles unified online and in-store across 332 stores, doubled trade orders, and won Adobe's Experience Maker "The Mastermind" award for it.

MyFUJIFILM saw a 69% conversion rate increase.

The pattern in all four is the same: the headless architecture is not the achievement, it is what made the achievement affordable. One catalogue, many faces, and a front end fast enough that the performance conversation stopped happening.

Headless questions

What people ask before going headless

What is headless Magento?

Splitting the storefront from the platform. Magento or Adobe Commerce keeps doing catalogue, pricing, checkout and orders; a separate front end — usually React or a PWA — handles what the customer sees, and talks to the back end over APIs. The benefit is speed and flexibility. The cost is a second system to run.

Who are the top agencies for building headless eCommerce?

We would obviously say us, so here is the objective bit instead: ask any agency how many headless builds they have actually launched, how long ago the first one was, and whether they still support them. Ours are 50+, 15 years, and yes. Anyone can build a headless storefront once.

Is headless better for SEO?

It can be much better, and it can be much worse. Done properly — server-side rendering, clean URLs, structured data, fast Core Web Vitals — headless outperforms a traditional theme. Done as a client-side-only single-page app, it is an SEO disaster that takes a year to notice. The architecture decision is an SEO decision, which is why we make them together.

Does Adobe Commerce support headless?

Yes, and Adobe Commerce as a Service (ACCS) is headless-only — there is no monolithic front end to fall back on. Adobe Commerce Cloud supports both. If you are moving to ACCS, headless is not a choice you are making, it is the platform you are moving to.

How long does a headless build take?

Four to eight months for a single storefront, depending on integrations. Additional storefronts on the same back end are dramatically faster — that is the whole point of the architecture, and it is where a multi-brand business gets its money back.

Can you make our existing Magento site headless without rebuilding it?

Sometimes. If the back end is on a supported Magento 2 version and reasonably clean, we can build a new front end against it and leave the platform in place. If the back end is heavily customised in the presentation layer, that customisation is the thing you are trying to escape, and it has to be unpicked first. An audit tells us which of those you are.
