Magento 2.4.1: new Media Gallery and expanded GraphQL

Magento 2.4.1 is out. Three parts of it are worth your attention: the new Media Gallery, continued PWA Studio work, and wider GraphQL coverage.

The Media Gallery has been redesigned. It brings a cleaner interface for managing product images, bulk upload so you are not adding assets one at a time, better metadata and tagging so you can find things again, and direct access to Adobe Stock without leaving the admin panel.

If your catalogue is large, the time saved here is real. Image management is one of those tasks that quietly consumes a merchandiser's week.

PWA Studio

PWA Studio picks up enhanced scaffolding tools, performance optimisation built into the framework, and updated documentation and tooling. None of it is headline material; all of it shortens the distance between a decision and a deployed change, which is what building a fast, app-like storefront actually depends on.

GraphQL expansion

Two new areas are covered:

  • Product reviews — retrieve and manage them through GraphQL queries.

  • Gift options — gift messaging and wrapping, through the API.

For anyone building a custom storefront or a mobile app, that is two more things you no longer have to reach back to REST for.

What this means for you

If you are on Magento 2.4.0 or earlier, 2.4.1 is worth evaluating on its merits rather than upgrading to on principle. Test it in staging, review the compatibility of your custom extensions and integrations, and give QA enough time before you commit to a go-live date.

The Media Gallery is the change most likely to be felt day to day by the people actually running your store — which is usually a better reason to upgrade than anything on the release notes.
