Edge Delivery Services goes GA for Experience Manager

In October 2023 Adobe announced general availability of Edge Delivery Services (EDS) for Adobe Experience Manager. It is worth paying attention to even if you are a commerce team rather than a content one, because of where Adobe has said it goes next.

What Edge Delivery Services is

EDS is a cloud-native content delivery architecture that serves content from global edge nodes rather than a central origin. Content sits geographically closer to your customers, which cuts latency and gets you sub-second page loads regardless of where they are.

It is built on open web standards, and it is deliberately unfussy about authoring — content can be authored in familiar tools, including spreadsheets and GitHub repositories, while the service handles the infrastructure underneath.

What merchants get

Performance at scale. Sites built with EDS consistently achieve Lighthouse scores above 80 and page load times under one second. For eCommerce that shows up in SEO rankings, engagement and conversion.

Less infrastructure to run. EDS is fully managed by Adobe. No servers to maintain, no CDN configuration to tune, no scaling plan for a traffic spike.

Authoring flexibility. It supports several authoring approaches, from a traditional development workflow to spreadsheet-based content management, so teams of different technical depth can work in it.

The commerce angle

EDS launched first for Experience Manager, but Adobe has signalled clear intent to extend it to Adobe Commerce (Magento) in future releases. A decoupled architecture pairing fast content delivery with a flexible commerce backend is a genuinely different starting point for building a storefront.

What this means for you

If you run Experience Manager, migrating to EDS is worth a serious look now — the setup has been streamlined and the performance gain shows up straight away. If you run both Experience Manager and Adobe Commerce, start working out how EDS fits your content strategy, so that when the commerce integration lands you are adopting it rather than starting to think about it.
