January 2024 brought two changes to Adobe Commerce (Magento) Catalog Service: related products data in the API, and faster product detail page load times. Both land squarely on headless builds.
Related products in the Catalog Service API
If you were using Catalog Service for a headless storefront, related product recommendations meant a second call. The January update exposes related, up-sell and cross-sell product data directly through the Catalog Service GraphQL API, so you no longer fetch them separately. Less latency, and simpler integration logic.
For composable storefronts that means a smoother product discovery flow with no architectural cost — the PDP now has everything it needs from one request.
Faster PDP load times
Adobe optimised the Catalog Service backend to bring down response times on product queries. Merchants building headless applications report 20-30% faster PDP load times. On a conversion-focused site that is worth having on its own, and it feeds straight into Core Web Vitals and search rankings.
What this means for you
If you run a headless storefront, this is a change you get by asking for the data in a different shape — no replatforming, no new service. Simpler integrations, faster pages, fewer API calls to pay for. If you are still weighing Catalog Service against pulling product data another way, this makes the decision easier.
